Contemporary is not a separate world
Contemporary is a style within contemporary choreography, not a parallel discipline: in the programme it comes together with modern jazz, and alongside them classical dance, acrobatics and acting are studied separately. That is why children who take contemporary seriously usually attend not one class but a package of them.
Why individual or a small group
Contemporary involves a great deal of work with the centre of the body, with weight, breath and floor work, and precision matters here — precision you cannot set in a large group. One to one, or in a pair or a trio, lets the teacher see every movement and lead a child at the pace their body is ready for.
On the approach to movement, see Not "copy me": why modern methodology starts with understanding movement; on group levels and auditions, see Hobby, midline, PRO: how the groups work — and what is assessed at an audition.
