How a competition routine is born
What lies behind a competition routine: months of work before the first rehearsal, the music, the character — and why staging a routine is not an individual lesson.
From the outside it looks simple: a child walked into the studio, learned the movements, danced. In reality a competition routine begins a month or two before the child first hears their music.
First — thinking
Staging a routine is a major piece of intellectual work. Choosing a style that suits this particular child — their character, their physical capabilities, their stage of development. Finding music, and often producing an arrangement together with a DJ. Devising a character. Constructing the routine so that it reveals the best of what the child can do today — and matches the level of the stage we are heading for: the demands of the Dance World Cup and of a local festival are different worlds.
If a child does not understand what they are dancing about, the judge seeing the routine for the first time will not see it either. So a strong routine always has a story and a meaning — and the ability to live them on stage is something we train separately in acting classes.
Who stages it
Not every teacher, however excellent, is a strong choreographer — that is a separate talent. So besides our own team we regularly invite star choreographers from across Ukraine with a recognisable signature — particularly when it will do a child good to try themselves in a new style. Experience shows that such encounters accelerate growth very noticeably.
Then — a season of work
A child learns the finished choreography over a few sessions (with our teacher present), and after that the routine is polished throughout the school year, to perfection. That is exactly why staging a routine and an individual lesson are different things, even though both are one-to-one work with a child: an individual lesson is regular training, while staging a routine is a separate creative product with a separate fee for the choreographer.
