🤸 5 myths about stretching

04 April 2026

"I'll have my splits in a month", "stretching is meant to hurt", "after 30 it's too late". Let's sort these out.

Myth 1: "I'll have my splits in a month"

Realistically it takes from 6 months to 2 years, depending on genetics, your starting point and consistency. Anyone promising a month is taking liberties with your body.

Myth 2: "Stretching is meant to hurt"

It should feel like a pull, not pain. If the pain is sharp, that is not progress, that is injury.

Myth 3: "After 30 it's too late"

Bodies get into splits at 50 and at 60 too. Just more slowly. Our morning classes have clients who started at 45 — and they got there.

Myth 4: "You have to stretch for an hour every day"

15–20 minutes 3–4 times a week is the sweet spot. More than that means micro-tears.

Myth 5: "Stretching is for girls"

Tell that to breakers, who cannot do footwork without flexible hips.
