The method: not "copy me"

Contemporary choreography at IDC is led by the studio's senior instructor, Yuniia Furman. Her approach is built on biomechanics — on understanding where a movement comes from, what it is for, and why one thing works for a child while another does not yet. A teacher does not demand a movement the body is not ready for, but leads towards it step by step.

The foundation it rests on

The programme combines folk, classical and stage dance fundamentals without rigid frames: children express themselves freely through movement and search for their own style, while floor barre and stretching prepare the body for load safely.

What it gives a child

Movement that is understood rather than mechanically copied; a lower risk of injury; a base that carries over into any other style. More on the approach in the article Not "copy me": why modern methodology starts with understanding movement.

What contemporary choreography includes

There are two dance styles as such — contemporary and modern jazz. Alongside them, classical choreography (the base without which a professional path in contemporary dance is impossible), acrobatics and acting are studied separately. "It is a package for a dancer's professional growth," is how senior instructor Yuniia Furman puts it.

What a child can do after a year

Provided they come regularly and want it themselves: functional physical ability, flexibility, coordination, a sense of their own body, a feel for music and for pitch. "A child really can come into their dancing within a year."

Basics that even experienced children often lack

Positions of the arms and feet, a sense of the centre of the body, how to hold the legs, flex and point, roll down and roll up, the fundamentals of contemporary and modern jazz. This layer is invisible from the outside, but without it the next levels either do not build at all, or build at a cost to the body. That is why a child with experience from another studio often starts in an intermediate group rather than going straight into PRO.

When to start

At the beginning of the season. "A syllabus is built from the very beginning. Joining midway is the same as starting a book from the middle instead of page one," Yuniia says about the familiar "we'll start after the new year". More in Contemporary choreography in plain words — and what a child can do after a year.
